Gatwick is the busiest single runway airport in the world, the second largest airport in the UK after Heathrow and the seventh busiest in the world. It handles over 34 million passengers every year and is looking to grow to 40 million by 2011.
It opened its second terminal in 1988 and now serves 90 airlines going to 200 destinations. Originally known as an airport for UK holidaymakers travelling on charters, it has developed into a major hub with 43% of its traffic now on scheduled.
